Bipolar Disorder is a psychiatric ailment which is characterized by fluctuations n mood and arousal levels. These mood fluctuations are catastrophic and can lead to significant impairment in daily functioning. The most significant mood alteration is known as mania. Patients that are manic are extremely effusive and truculent with their behavior. They are very impetuous and they tend to make unwise decisions that they usually later regret. The additional mood state (which is only applicable with a Bipolar type 2 diagnosis and Cylclothymia) is depression; this mood state is associated with hypokinesia, which is characterized by delayed movements and lethargy, and their affect may seem aloof and disinterested towards enjoyable activities that they would previously find enjoyable. Depressed patients tend to suffer from extreme sadness. Everything seems entirely doleful from their perspective and they frequently experience suicidal ideation.
To treat the psychotic features of Bipolar Disorder, especially during the manic phase, requires a significant understanding of the patient's sociopsychobiological history.
Usually the best treatment includes Antipsychotic medications and Anti-sezure medications that are used to quell the underlying aggressivity, impulsivity, and psychotic elements that tend to accompany the diagnosis.of mania.
